My Greyhound story is as follows. We had always had dogs, never a greyhound. My children were grown and my oldest son was in law school and working part time in a law office. I was waiting for him outside his office when a lady came down the street walking two of the most graceful, elegant dogs I had ever seen. They entered a office building. Well my son got back to the car and I asked about the dogs. He told me they were retired racing greyhounds and they came to the office almost every day. I was fascinated and decided to look into getting a dog like this. I searched on the Internet and found Southeastern Greyhound Adoption. I filled out an application and talked with the people at the adoption group. Then I met Lacy (CG Heart Tune). She is a magnificent dog and fit in with my family, other dogs and cats.
I had never had any contact with greyhound racing and I had heard things about how the dogs were mistreated at the tracks. I quickly determined that this could not be true. I have seen and been associated with dogs that have been poorly socialized, neglected and abused and that is not Lacy. I need to mention that she came from a very poor track. She is confident, calm, gets along with other dogs, children and adults. She has been to meet and greets, parades, friends houses with large groups of people and dogs and she is confident, well mannered and a delight to be around.
One of her favorite things is to go lure coursing. Our greyhound club sponsors four coursing meets a year and Lacy participates in the fun runs. She loves to chase the lure. Seeing the joy that running gives her does my heart good. The excitement starts when we turn onto the dirt road and she can hardly wait until it is her turn. Chasing the lure is her heart's desire.
Greyhounds were bred to run with purpose. They are a working sporting dog with a purpose in life. They were not intended to be a "couch potato" or even a pet. The fact that they make an incredible companion dog and adapt so well to life off the track is a testament to the care and training they get at the track. I support Greyhound racing and believe it will be to the detriment of the breed to abolish racing.
